iPhone executive leaves Apple

Mark Papermaster, an executive overseeing the iPhone hardware engineering, is leaving Apple Inc.
The company did not explain the reason why the executive decided to leave the company. It is known that he was a senior vice president of iPhone and iPod hardware engineering. Papermaster provided no comments.

In accordance with news reports, the executive was unable to make serious decisions and had lost the confidence in the company. This quit does either not rise Apple’s PR which has been recently bad due its new iPhone 4 and antenna issues since iPhone 4’s launch in June.

An Apple spokesman noticed that Papermaster’s position will be transfered to a senior vice president of Macintosh hardware engineering Bob Mansfield.

Before Apple, Papermaster had worked for IBM for quite a long time. When he was quitting for Apple, IBM even filed a lawsuit against him and accused Papermaster of violating the agreement.

IBM let Papermaster join Apple last year. Under Papermaster Apple launched its extremely successful iPhone 4 (1.7 mln units were sold in the first 3 days!).

Back in time:

Despite the iPhone 4’s unexpected success, users noticed a significant signal loss provided the device was held in a certain way. It was believed that the reason of the unpleasant issue was defective antenna. At first users were instructed on how to hold the phone in a proper way or suggested to get a rubber “bumper”. Subsequently, an update to the iOS 4.0.1 was issued.
Apple informed it would offer owners a free rubber bumpers for resolving the topical problem.

Most Users of iPhone 4 Are Very Satisfied With It

satisfactory surveys by ChangeWave revealed iphone 4 3GS customers are satisfied but scores are lower so Apple is OKA new survey (ChangeWave Research) revealed that almost all users of iPhone 4 are satisfied with the new unit despite numerous difficulties and antenna issues.

214 independent users took part in the survey, and 73 % of them informed that they are “very satisfied” with the device. What concerns the rest of interviewers, 22 % were “somewhat satisfied.” It is obviously that these satisfaction scores are considered to be very high. One more reason to this fact is the controversy that concerned iPhone 4 since its launch.

Nevertheless, these scores are lower than the iPhone 3GS ones which were received in the months after its release. Last year ChangeWave Research reported that 83 % of iPhone 3GS users were “very satisfied” with it and 18% told they were “somewhat satisfied.”

Consequently, customer satisfaction ratings of the iPhone are somewhat worse than those of the iPhone 3GS’s.

When it goes to the reaction of the iPhone 4 users’ to antenna issues with their device, most of them told they were rather tied, while 25% of the owners reported this issue as a problem. The #1 dislike of the iPhone 4’s users is the “Requirement to Use AT&T’s Network” (27%).

Despite well-known antenna issues with the iPhone 4, its users reported a lower dropped call rating when compared to iPhone 3GS (5.2% in July 2010 and 6.3% in June 2010 respectively).

Additionally, 74% of iPhone 4 users are “very satisfied”/”somewhat satisfied” with a free case solution to antenna problems.

In accordance with ChangeWave, the iPhone 4 is the best smartphone in terms of satisfaction ratings of its users.

Numerous residents of Canadian Vancouver lined up near Apple store in order to purchase the new iPhone 4 among the first in Canada and become the happy owners of this unbeaten device. Some people state they have been waiting several years for iPhone 4 to come out.

The price for 32-GB iPhone 4 (contracted one) is approximately CAD 2,000. Nevertheless, virtually all customers are sure iPhone is worth this money. Since iPhones feature HD video, they can be used instead of video camera.

Most customers tend to opt for paying for unlocked versions of the iPhone 4 rather than purchasing discounted phones which are locked just to one carrier.
Even the occurance with Apple’s antenna problem could not stop buyers. Moreover, many people join the line for iPhone paying no attention to the controversy that has been blown unreasonably.

It has been recently announced that Apple would provide the customers with free cases or bumpers for iPhone 4s in order to alleviate reception troubles with the new device.

Apple stunned by huge iPad / iPhone 4 demand

apple ipad iphone 4 doesn't demands high demand on iproduct tim cook apple coo profitsThe situation is that Apple has not enough quantities both of iPads and iPhones 4. In such a way, the consumers’ demand is not satisfied for 100%. Besides, the company has no idea when it’s gonna be enough units and how many of them are still in shortage. Specialists assure no artificial shortage of the devices is created.

Tim Cook, Apple Chief operation officer pointed out that this shortage of iPhones and iPads, that differ considerably, is not Apple’s objective since the company does its best to fill all the orders as quickly as possible. He said that Apple had orders backlog of these units at the end of last quarter. The point is that the company didn’t manage to fill demand, and these days Apple is selling iPhones and iPads as fast as they produce them.

However, Cook noticed that Apple are not just selling iPads and iPhones 4 as they produce them, but they are working 24/7 to meet the demands of customers.

At the same time Tim Cook didn’t provide the details on what exactly caused the shortages of iPhones and iPads. He assured that the company would manage to increase producing of iProducts.

What concerns the problem with iPhones, it is rather new, and the point is that its producing is not yet up to full speed. Apple started to ramp it in June, and the volume of iPhones is still increasing.

Anyway, it cannot be said that Cook is very upset because the brand new products are in high demand nowadays. According to his words, “High demand is never a problem”.

But still, Cook cannot announce exact numbers in profits on iPhones 4 and iPads that are lost by reason of Apple’s inability to meet consumers’ demands.

iPad

It follows that the company was taken by surprise by the sales rates of iPads since COO announced that they had planned a million capacity per month for iPads. Besides, many analysts predicted that Apple would only be selling that quantity approximately for the whole year. For the first 90 days of iPad release a million devices were produced monthly.

iPad sales estimates were increased from 7.1 million to 12.9 million by iSuppli by the end of 2010. In case these numbers are true, the iPad sales rate will be put for this year at over 1.4 million per month.

iPhone 4

What concerns iPhone, Apple COO explained that the demand for iPhone 4 is really significant, and the company does its best to serve the demand. Though Cook couldn’t predict when that would happen, but he assured that everyone in the company was striving to do it. Cook was uncompromised when asked about the effects that Antenna gate had on demand.

In addition, Tim Cook informed that Apple is going to shut down producing of older models (iPhone 3GS) for promoting early adoption of newer models. The company’s goal is the promotion of the new product in the market.

iPhone 4’s Antenna

iphone 4 antenna problems steve jobs appleThe problems with Apple iPhone 4 antenna are still major technical issues. Nevertheless, the debate has changed recently. Before Apple’s last press conference, it was debated how Apple would answer and explain its position. The problem with antennas of the iPhone 4 had its foregone evaluation.

Jobs provided evidence that the people who purchased iPhone 4 are now the happiest customers. It is known that the return rates of iPhone 4 are lower than in case of iPhone 3GS. However, the tech press was accused of exaggerating the current problem. At present, it is debated whether Jobs is right or wrong.

At the same time Research in Motion, HTC, Nokia and Samsung fired back at Apple. HTC supported calls for the Droid Eris. Before, Jobs noticed the signals’ losing while tight grip. It concerned the reception issues 0.016% of the time, when comparing with for iPhone 4’ 0.55%.

That is why Apple had no way out but deflect the problem. Patrick Kerley, an expert in communication, pointed out that softening the focus on Apple is a standard way to discuss all situations occurred. Obviously, the readers of any media get confused since both sides tell different stories. Consequently, the question arises whether only iPhone 4 features an antenna problem, or any Smartphone has such problems.

Both Computerworld and Fortune’s Seth Weintraub noted that the problem of iPhone 4 (causing loss of signal by a finger when bridging the space between antennas) lies not in the entire covering up a telephone. The point is that the external antenna and the slight pressure are required to interfere with it.

Offering free cases on the table and a 3-week term to wait for customers of iPhone 4, Apple can be sure of succcess.

Telecom Replies “Yes” on Micro-SIM Plans

It is known that Telecom Inc. techos and twitterati used to insist that the company was in the process of inventing a new a Micro-SIM card. Nevertheless, the spin doctors of the company neither confirmed nor denied this statement.
Nowadays, Chris Quin, the director of the division of telco’s Gen-i Australasia services, confirmed that Micro-SIMs are going to be available in August.
The Micro-SIMs are supposed to be available through Telecom stores and dealers via the  Gen-i services division of the company.
This will secure the ability of Telecom customers to use an XT SIM card with iPhone 4, officially carried by Vodafone and the 1st cellphone to support the new format of Micro-SIM.
Before, Vodafone announced a Micro-SIM push to swap Prepay SIMs to Micro-SIMs, and contract customers able to receive the new card format for free.
At present, there are no cellphones on the local markets that take Micro-SIMs, and only 2 devices on the global stage – a little handset the iPhone 4 and the iPad 3G.
Chris Quin noticed that the company doesn’t have any specific plans for the SIM. The company needs to make sure the network is completely available for Mirco-SIM devices.
It may be concluded that Gen-i Australasia services want to ensure the XT customers can still pop an XT-compatible SIM cards into iPhone4.
The iPhone 4 and the iPad 3G will be able to support the new Micro-SIM format. Excluding them, Micro-SIM is only seen by 3G equipped devices.
Regular SIM cards can be cut down to fill Micro-SIM slots with the scissors.
Luckily, Telecom offers Micro-SIMs that can help keep iPhone 4 network in the mainstream.
In addition, it will be of assistance for Gen-i’s guerrilla iPhone campaign (buying iPhones at retail, tweaking them for running on XT and handing them to Telecom customers).
Another problem for Vodafone is that Parallel Imported is taking an approach to promote the iPhone 4.
Currently, Parallel Imported takes pre-orders online and expects delivery late July.
